Welcome to another edition of Talk Radio with NO Radio!  On location and broadcasting remote and straight to you from St. Martin, we will be joining author CLR Dougherty for a Book Release Celebration party, and hopefully, I am going to scoop an exclusive interview for you today!

kimshabeachI’ve just arrived at Kim Sha Beach at Simpson Bay; Charles couldn’t have picked a nicer place for this shindig.  This is quite the party site, too.   St. Martin’s huge annual bash for the Heineken Regatta was held here just a couple of months ago.  Between the restaurants, bars and resorts surrounding this amazing beach, I am going to enjoy my stay…I jumped at the invitation to come to this event, St Martin, come on, who wouldn’t?  This is also a long-overdue romantic getaway for my husband and I — but business first.  Let’s go find Charles and see if we can get that interview!

We are walking down the beach towards a huge tent.  It’s about 4 in the afternoon and a comfortable 82 degrees, complimented by a lovely warm breeze…just makes you want to pop into any one of these little beach bars and ask for a Mojito!  <stops, turns to the water, lifts chin to soak in the sun’s rays with closed eyes, sighs a deep release of tension and breathes in, as if to absorb the entire experience in one breath>

Wow!  This place is amazing.  I wish I could have brought you all here with me!  The water is the most stunning shade of blue I have ever seen.  There are a couple dozen sailboats anchored just off shore, bobbing gently on this tranquil edge of the ocean.  <walks to water’s edge and gazes out to sea>  Standing here, just at the edge of the water, is the perfect place to take it all in and enjoy the warm, soothing waves as they spread up onto these white sandy beaches and tease our toes.  <Shakes off the dreamy thought of staying in this paradise forever and looks down the beach, takes husband’s hand and refocuses>

Off we go then.  Let’s get to the celebration and find Charles.  I see quite a few people milling around on the beach around the tent.  Right there on the side of the tent is a banner, “Blue Water Ice Book Release Celebration” and “Congratulations C L R Dougherty!” is a on a flag that is waving ever so gently from one of the tent poles in this wonderful breeze.  The tent is set up open air; the sides are pulled to the corners and tied back with rope.   I see tables inside, displaying a long buffet of appetizers and fruit baskets, an ice sculpture and a champagne fountain.  We’ll make our way through the crowd here and ah, there in the corner near a table filled with books, appears to be the guest of honor!  Let’s go introduce ourselves…

DH:  Hello!  You must be Charles.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACD:  Yes.  Hello.  Judging by the microphone, you must be Mrs. Hartmann, all the way from North Carolina to join our celebration.

DH:  Absolutely.  Thank you so much for inviting me!  It’s a great pleasure to meet you.  Please just call me Debra or Deb.  This is my husband, Bob.  Today, he’s my roadie, of course. <Charles extends a hand, but Bob’s hands are full and he rushes to set the bags down and accept the handshake.  We all laugh, and the ice is broken.>

CD:  It’s wonderful that you came all this way just to do this interview.  Thanks!  I have a signed copy of Bluewater Ice set aside for you.  I hope you enjoy it enough to make the trip worthwhile.

DH:  Oh, thank you.  I wasn’t expecting that but I certainly will treasure it.  I have a few signed books, it’s a hobby really to collect them, but only from authors that I have met so they truly have some meaning.  You know this sets you up for another book review too!

CD:  Well, I hope so!  <Grins ear to ear and gestures for us to take seats behind the book signing table with him> So, join me here and we can talk and do that interview.  It may get a bit loud when more guests start to arrive.

DH:  Brilliant!  And then I, well I mean we, can focus just on the celebration afterwards!

CD:  I’m planning to slip out before it gets too crazy.  I left big bashes like this behind when I bailed out of the corporate world.  We’ll have a mob of locals and tourists showing up for the free booze.  I’ll leave a couple of folks here to make everybody welcome; maybe they’ll even sell a few books.  Maybe you and Bob could skip out with us and have a sundowner on the boat.

DH:  You mentioned having your boat just off the beach when we spoke a few days ago.  Can I see it from here?clrdoughertysailboat

CD: <Standing up, gesturing toward the bay> Sure.  She’s the little green one just to the left of that big white one.  See it? With Play Actor across the stern?

DH:  Wow! What a beauty!  Are you always anchored in such lovely spots?

CD:  Most of the time, but all of the islands are different.  Some are a lot prettier in terms of their natural beauty.  St. Martin’s unique because it’s split down the middle, politically.  The northern part is a department of France and the southern part is a Dutch colony.  This is one of our favorite hangouts; we’re sitting here on the border between the French side and the Dutch side, a ten minute dinghy ride from some of the best French restaurants in the world.  And then there are the beaches…

DH:  So is this why so many of your books are set in the Caribbean and feature sailing?

CD:  Yes.  It’s hard to be here and not share it all in a story or two.

DH:  It is getting a little loud already.  Can we walk for a few minutes and talk?

CD:  Sure.  Let’s walk down the beach a bit—

<Microphone tap, tap, tap sounds out, and the crowd’s heads turn towards the source.  A loud squeal comes over the speakers on tripod-like stands in the two corners facing out to the beach.  Positioned dead center between the speakers and just in front of the buffet table is a petite woman with short, curly blond hair.  She’s holding a microphone.>

PA system:  Welcome, everyone!  Welcome.  My name is Dani Berger; I’ll be your hostess this evening.  Thank you all for coming!  We are here to celebrate the release of a new book by Mr. Dougherty over here <waves for Charles to join her, “excuse me” Charles whispers to me and then walks toward the announcer>  Come on over here Charles.  Everyone, this is Charles L R Dougherty, author of the Bluewater Thriller Series as well as some other great novels, but we are here tonight to celebrate his latest release, Bluewater Ice, the fourth in the series, and, well, I wouldn’t even exist if not for this man’s wonderful imagination!  Let’s give him a big hand, everyone!

<Clapping overtakes the crowd, making the number of people in attendance more obvious…at least a hundred people are shoulder to shoulder inside the tent now and another hundred or so have gathered around just outside, all facing Dani and listening attentively.  The din of clapping hands fades as Charles accepts the microphone from Dani.>

CD:   Thanks, Dani.  Is your sidekick here tonight?

Dani:  Liz?  She’s here somewhere.  This is all about you, though. <”Hey!  We love you Charles!” resounds.  From deep in the middle of the crowd a hand rises above and waves frantically.>   Oh, there she is.  Liz and I can’t thank you enough for our parts in your story and of course we wish you much success with the latest release!

<Another round of applause breaks out. The frantic hand in the crowd still waves but moves ever closer to Dani and Charles.  Another blonde about Dani’s size continues to wave as she breaks through the front of the crowd and steps up to join them.  At a little distance, the two women could be mistaken for sisters, except that Dani is blue-eyed where this new woman has flashing green eyes.  They’re dressed alike; both wear white T-shirts with a large picture of a sailing yacht on the back and the word Vengeance emblazoned prominently across the front.  Knee-length khaki shorts and deck shoes without socks complete their crew uniforms.  The newcomer takes the microphone.>

Liz:   Hi!  I’m Liz Chirac.  Dani and I are thrilled that you could make it tonight–

<She’s interrupted by the crowd.>

“Woooo!”

“Great party!”

Liz:   Thank you!  Thanks for coming.  We want everyone to enjoy their time here with us tonight; it sounds like you are already.  Dani and I will be at the book-signing table <waves toward corner where we first met Charles and now wait for him, so we wave back at the crowd like the two goofballs we are> for a bit while you all enjoy the buffet.  Stop by and get your signed copy of Bluewater Ice and say hello.  Drinks—

<She’s interrupted again.>

“Yea!  Free booze!”

Liz:  Yes.  Free Booze – always a must at a party, right?  Just over there <points to the corner opposite the book-signing table> is where those with the personal invitations should gather in two hours.  Dani and l will be taking you out to the Vengeance by way of those small boats along the beach for a sunset cruise after the party.

CD:   Thanks, Liz and Dani, for all your hard work in putting this together, and thanks for being in the books, as well.  Dani said you wouldn’t be here except for my imagination, but we wouldn’t be having this party except for you letting me tell your story.  <He shakes their hands and returns to the corner where Bob and I are waiting to continue our interview.>

DH:  Well, you have quite the following out here Charles.  They seem to know you so well here on the island.

CD:  I think they know the free booze better! <smiles knowingly>

DH: Shall we take that walk then?  I sense you’ll be needed at this book-signing table as soon as glasses are filled and plates of food devoured.

CD:  Could be, but I signed books for the last two days so that I wouldn’t have to stay.  Liz and Dani will take care of everything.  Let’s do the rest of that interview and then we can all kick back and enjoy the evening.

DH:  Brilliant!  Lead the way.  <We slip through an opening behind the table and next to the corner where the tent sides are tied back in a bundle.  We work our way through a few groups of stragglers waiting to get closer to the event as they sip drinks with umbrellas sticking out of them and laugh.  As we walk by, some of them point and stare.>

CD:  Tourists.  They came in droves when Dani and Liz started posting the signs by the pools of the two big resorts earlier today.

DH:  Such a good turnout for so little advertising.  That’s great. <now walking side by side, microphone in hand, Bob trailing behind with the remote box and the binder with Deb’s notes and a beer he swiped on this way out of the tent> So, Charles, my first question for you is this. Obviously we all know the name of the latest book now, but could you explain to us just briefly what it is about?

CD:  Actually, you just met two of the main characters.  Dani Berger and Liz Chirac own and run a 60-foot charter yacht named Vengeance.  The whole Bluewater Thriller series is about their escapades.   In Bluewater Ice, Connie Barrera is their guest and she’s just run off with $10 million in diamonds that she ‘found’ in Nassau; the people who lost them are chasing her.  Neither the thugs who are after Connie nor Connie herself have any idea what kind of people Liz and Dani are.   Dani has family friends scattered through the islands, and most of them will come to her aid in a pinch.  Dani and Liz are resourceful in their own right, and the Bluewater Thrillers are filled with bad guys who came to grief by underestimating the two of them.

DH:  Do you have plans for more books in the series?

CD:  Yes, I already have preliminary ideas for the fifth and sixth books, so I think it will go on for quite a while.  Part of the fun of a series is watching the characters grow and change as a result of their experiences, and that doesn’t get old.  The evolution of the relationship between Dani and Liz is as fascinating as the predicaments that influence their behavior.

DH:   I haven’t read any of these books but I did so enjoy your book Twisted Love.  Having come here and seen your inspiration and met the ladies, I must read this series!  It sounds very interesting and exciting!  Tell me though, what do you think makes a great story?

CD:  Beyond the basics, I think it’s important to have well-developed characters with whom the reader will empathize.  Even villains should evoke an empathetic response some of the time, if they’re realistic.  Giving the reader a clear picture of the environment is important, too, because it shapes the characters and puts them in context.

DH:   Absolutely.  It’s often said, “A good book makes you feel.”  For me, that is half of what affects my written book reviews, what I feel, how much I feel, etc.  I’m curious.  Which kind of reader do you think will enjoy this Bluewater Thriller series?

CD:  The target audience is made up of people who like action / adventure thrillers with a strong female protagonist – that’s Dani.  There’s a good bit of sailing, and a lot of local color, as well, so there’s a special appeal for readers who like to be transported to exotic locales while reading a fast-paced, realistic thriller.

DH:  Alright, so how about a little background about you Charles.  When you first started writing, how did you write?

CD:  I wrote Deception in Savannah, my first novel, with a pen, working in a loose-leaf binder.  I didn’t key it into a computer until about the fourth or fifth rewrite.  At the time, I could write much faster than I could type.  That’s changed over the course of the last eight books.  Not only has my typing improved, but I’ve developed a process that speeds up my writing.  I spent a couple of years working on that first novel; I wrote Bluewater Ice in eight weeks, from start to publication.

DH:  Are any of your characters based heavily on people you know or have met from real life and if so, would they regard it as a compliment or an insult to discover they were the inspiration for the character in question?

CD:  I recently received an alarming email from an old friend who had just finished Twisted Love.  She said something to the effect that she had really enjoyed it, especially since it was about people we both knew.  You just reviewed the book, so you can understand why that comment rattled me.  All of my characters are composites, made up of traits that I find interesting in people that I meet.  None of my characters is based substantially on any one person, so I wrote my friend back and asked her to elaborate.  Her answer was absolutely fascinating to me; none of the people that she thought she recognized were people that I consciously considered when I was writing the book.  I’m pretty sure that no one would feel complimented to learn that they inspired some of those characters.

DH:  Just goes to show you, you really can’t anticipate all the ways that people can identify or relate to different aspects of your books.  It’s a crap shoot really but well written books can have a wide range of effects on a wide range of readers and that is a great measure of success!  Have you ever written a supporting character who took on a life of their own or turned out to be far more popular than expected and if so do you have plans to feature them as the lead character in a story of their own?

CD:  Yes.  I’ve had that happen more than once.  Two characters from Deception in Savannah come to mind.  One was Connie Barrera; I found her to be an interesting person.  She was a survivor who fought her way up from her humble beginnings; she was led astray by situational ethics and narrowly escaped becoming an out-and-out crook.  She features prominently in Bluewater Ice.  The other character from Deception in Savannah who begs for his own story is Donald Tompkins, a would-be con man with attention deficit disorder and a photographic memory.  He’s going to show up in a book of his own one of these days.

DH:  Why did you start writing?

CD: <laughs and still grinning widely he answers>  I keep asking myself that question.  I couldn’t tell you why I started smoking or drinking, either, but I was able to give up those two vices.  Writing is a different kind of addiction, I suppose…

DH:  Now about that free booze <points back to the party> will you join me in a quick drink and a toast to your success?

CD:  Do you think we are going to be able to get back in through that crowd?

DH:  Maybe not!  The music is blaring, everyone is dancing and having a blast, what a great party but I too left my party days behind me years ago-

CD:  Won’t you both join me for a night cap on the boat?  The dinghy is just right there, and I have some snacks aboard, too—

DH: Oh that’s very thoughtful but we don’t want to intrude and I already had to get on a plane this week.  I don’t want to push my sanity and include a boat at this point!  I am a land lover, I’ll admit it! <shrugs and smiles>

CD:  Ah, another time then, I am going to slip away though, it was so great to finally meet you in person and thank you so much for coming.  I hope you will enjoy your stay on the island, how long will you be here?

<the light reflecting off the water shimmers and the temperature and fragrance of the air changes slowly, yet drastically as Debra awakens from a nap on her sofa near the picture window in her studio, high in the mountains of Asheville, NC.  Cobwebs clear away and leave the memories of the wonderful conversations shared with C L R Dougherty earlier today, about the interview and about how much he loves the time he spends in St. Martin.  She reflects on their conversations, the wonderful pictures he shared and realizes she needs to get the interview written, as promised for publishing today and is running late now because she dozed off.  Looking over the notes, Debra realizes the interview and the skit are done but is quite foggy about how or when that happened exactly…>

Author Bio:

Charles Dougherty wrote quite a bit of fiction before publishing Deception in Savannah, his first novel. Most of his earlier fiction works took the form of business plans, written to secure funding for projects and startup ventures during his corporate and consulting work, but he put all of that behind him when he wrote Deception in Savannah, a tongue-in-cheek crime novel.

Since Deception in Savannah was published, he has written a number of other books. Bluewater Killer, Bluewater Vengeance, Bluewater Voodoo, and Bluewater Ice are the first four books in his Bluewater Thriller series. The Bluewater Thrillers are set in the yachting world of the Caribbean and chronicle the adventures of two young women running a luxury charterSunset in the lagoon, Ste. Martin, FWI yacht in a rough-and-tumble environment. Book five of the Bluewater Thriller series will be published in the second half of 2013. His most recent book before Bluewater Ice was Twisted Love, a psycho-thriller, published in February, 2013.

He has also written two non-fiction books. Life’s a Ditch is the story of how he and his wife moved aboard their sailboat, Play Actor, and their adventures along the east coast of the U.S.  Dungda de Islan’ relates their experiences while cruising the Caribbean.

He resides with his wife aboard Play Actor, sailing wherever they fancy and the trade winds take them.

<takes microphone, goes out double doors and finds Lori pulling a kid’s hair tie from the leg of her jeans and points to the one stuck in the strap of her sandal, notices Tiara, perched on Lori’s head, shoos the dogs away but Lori is no help as she is playing with them so they are ignoring me>

Debra: Hi, you must be Lori, sorry ’bout the dogs, my son apparently didn’t put them in their pen before he left for school today.

Lori: Kids! <chucks hair ties back into her SUV and closes the door> Nah, don’t put the dawgs away, they’re too precious!<Lori is now on the ground, getting dog hair all over her beautiful blouse and just laughing and teasing with the dogs>

Debra: Welcome fellow dog lover!  So many folks are afraid of these two but they are just big babies, great guard dogs too!

Lori:  Did you say guard dawgs?  Pit bulls right?  They get such a bad rap, it’s a shame, since they’re so friendly.  I saw two other huge dogs when I first pulled up, why aren’t they out too?

Debra:  Yes, they are, Fancy and Smokey, now you two go play and leave Ms. Lori be, shoo! <off they go, heads hanging but obeying> Those are Great Pyrenees and they aren’t very social, they are livestock guardian dogs, their instinct is to scare you away from their pen.  They are friendly but just not used to people.  You would love to pet them, though, they have the softest fur!

Lori:  Oh, I would be covered in that long fur, I just know it and wouldn’t care a bit!  It’s really beautiful here Debra, you are very lucky!

Debra: Wait until you see my writing nook in front of the big picture window!  So, Lori, I just announced that our readers can enter to win a copy of the new book, anything you want to say right away to our audience?

Lori: <laughs but tries to stifle the laugh> Oh, we’re live already?!  Hi, everyone, thank you for being here today!  So exciting! <waves to the microphone and they both laugh>

Debra:  Shall we?  <leads the way to the studio doors>  Lori, I love the tiara and your boldness for wearing it in public, tell us about that, would you?IMG_0365

Lori:  Oh, my coffee mug!  I dropped it when I saw the dawgs, oh, here it is-

Debra:  I have a kitchen and a fresh pot of coffee inside, no problem!

Lori: Fresh coffee? Thank goodness! Now I know we’re soul mates! Oh, and the tiara, well, nothing monumental necessarily happens, as the author, on the official book release day. However, since it is monumental to me, I wear my jeweled tiara for the day in my own personal celebration. And of course, my husband and best friend, Mark and I will drink lots of wine later! <follows Debra into kitchen, rinses off the coffee mug and is searching for the coffee pot>

Debra: <pours coffee from the pot and grabs a big bag of M&M’s and a bowl, Lori’s eyes are wide and watching what Debra does with the bag as she follows her from the kitchen and to the sitting area>  How wonderful and you should celebrate, it is a big day and I am honored to be part of it with you.  I noticed you have several things planned for each day of the tour, you have put a ton of planning into all of this and its been truly amazing for me, to look to you as an example of how to market in this eBook commerce that is our reality today as authors.

Lori:  Thank you!  I’ve enjoyed working with everyone that signed up to do this tour with me and it really has been a great experience. <grabs a handful of M&M’s as Debra pours the bag into the bowl on the coffee table, chuckles>

Debra:  So, shall we get started then? <grabs some M&M’s, shuffles through papers to find the interview questions>

Lori: Mmm <chuckles>, yes, of course, I’m sorry, I keep chuckling because we sound so different and I am having a hard time understanding everything you say.  Between your Southern accent and my New York accent, we sound like complete opposites!

Debra: I know, right?  I am struggling a little too, you talk so fast but I actually did a lot of work with New Jersey and New York executives back in my corporate America days so it’s a little easier for me.  You could slow down a little though, it’s how fast you talk that is throwing me off?

Lori:  I’ll try!  <drags out the two words and laughs>

Debra:  <laughing> Ok, Lori, you’re killing me, you are such a hoot and have tripped my giggle switch!  Ok, here we go, ladies and germs, first question- Lori, set aside all the author, book, blog tour stuff and just share something about yourself, what do you do for fun?

Lori:  Ok, here’s a little tidbit, pretty personal and you can laugh… we do!  There is a local wine bar my husband and I go to occasionally, and my favorite thing of all is boating on Lake Gaston. We love to just ride around looking for birds, turtles, and other wildlife, and we call ourselves “The Sunset Hunters,” where we try to find the best spot to view the sunset in the summer. We fancy that we’ll have our own TV show!

Debra:  Oh, that is awesome!  Sounds like you and Mark, was it?

Lori: Yeah, Mark-

Debra:  Sounds like you and Mark might have the next great reality show there!  Can you tell us all a little about the tour, maybe more about the live launch party?

Lori:  Last year’s live launch party for “Momnesia” was amazing! Almost 100 guests attended and we all had a great time… especially me! I felt SO honored to have an actual line of people wanting to chat with me and have their book signed! I am extremely (no seriously, over-the-top!!!) excited about the upcoming live launch party for “Unexpecting,” as I anticipate potentially 150 or more guests, and can’t wait to meet new readers and see some of my existing fans! Plus, this year it will be even more organized, as I will have several lovely young ladies (my fifteen-year-old daughter and some of her friends) helping out with the prize entries, technology for the Kindle book buying on-site, etc. AND, my stepson is being our designated driver, so my husband and I can party the night away and not have to worry about driving!

Debra:  Amazing!  I really appreciated the invitation too, Lori, I am sorry I couldn’t make it but will come to the next one, I promise and as successful and talented as you are, I am sure there will be another one!   Another questions then, tell us, what’s the best and worst thing about being an author for you?

Lori:  Without question, it is the fluctuation in emotions during the stopgap of time between when my book is completely finished, and when readers first start reading it and posting reviews. One minute I am confident that my book is fabulous and the next moment I’m certain that it’s not fit for human consumption. It isn’t until I start getting feedback from actual readers that I’m able to just relax and accept that most readers do enjoy my books.

Debra:  That is hard, that waiting, I tend to try and focus on something else and it never works!  <laughs>  Do you have a favorite review or has anyone expressed a particularly nice compliment about your writing which stands out as your most memorable piece of praise?

Lori:  I have received so many wonderful e-mails from readers telling me that I changed their life in some way, and those have been the most meaningful to me. Whether a mom who was struggling with maintaining balance in her life, a woman who felt understood, or a pet owner who was spared from feeling like they need to get rid of their dog, they are the ones that mean the most.  As for professional reviews, there have also been some really good ones, including:

“An unforgettable journey laced with humor and reality.”

“Smart, crisp dialogue and a fast-moving, entertaining plot make [the book] a fun, 5-star read.”

Debra:  Do you need more coffee, yet, I am going to grab a glass of water, want anything? <is up and walking towards kitchen>

Lori:  Nah, I’m fine thanks, I’ve been watching past your shoulder at those two watching us though, can’t we let them in?

Debra:  <turns and looks at the brats leaving slobber on the double glass doors, rolls eyes at them>  Sure you can, if you’re sure they won’t be distracting for you?

Lori:  <jumps from chair and opens the doors, dogs rush in and settle around her feet as she sits back down, Debra returns from kitchen and bursts out laughing>

Debra:  Traitors!

Lori: They just know a dog lover when they see one, sorry, I do spoil pets, can’t help it!  This is so casual and comfortable and I was expecting a more formal radio interview, nice to have this break in the hectic pace of these past few weeks!

Debra:  Fantastic, that just made my day Lori!  I do this stuff for fun, a creative outlet if you will and to do something original and different and I always hope the authors enjoy the experience.  So, just for fun, could you sum up the new book, “Unexpecting” in 3 words?

Lori:  Makes you feel.

Debra:  Nice.  I started reading it, I am about a third of the way through it and will be finishing it tonight if I have to stay up way past my bed time…it’s amazing.  I am not old enough to relate to Shelley at that level and I only have one teenager but there is so much about her and the experiences that you wrote so well about in the book that I totally relate and love all of the characters.  Even the teens that are such pains in the butt and I love that Shelley and David are so realistic about dealing with their teens…I try to be with my son and maybe that’s the aspect I related to the most.  Anyway, I was wondering if you ever feel yourself becoming quite emotional when writing a particularly intense scene and is there a specific passage in particular where this was the case?

Lori:  It’s interesting that you asked this because I didn’t experience this with my other books, although “Momnesia” did contain a lot of emotion. However, with “Unexpecting,” I was surprised at the intensity with which my emotions became overwhelming at times. I actually had to take a break for a few weeks when writing the part about the Big Terrible Incident with David, and I was bawling my eyes out while typing the book’s ending.

Debra:  Wow, now I want to cut this short and finish the book right now-but we won’t!  What changes would you like to see take place in the publishing industry over the next few years?

Lori:  Ooh, I’m so glad you asked! With the explosion of indie authors and boutique presses, I think there is a great need for the industry to mature: I am so disappointed when I pick up a book that is riddled with spelling and grammatical errors! No matter how great the story is, or how wonderful of a writer they may be, every book needs professional editing and it is unfortunate that there is not yet any regulation in the industry to help weed out those that have not taken the steps to do that.

Debra:  Oh I couldn’t agree with you more.  I designed the structure of my editing business to meet this need specifically…editing is so expensive and by eliminating overhead I can offer access to great freelancers at much lower pricing than the industry standards.  What’s interesting is that the freelancers on my team, worked for those big firms and now make the same as they did then – the markup was huge for the companies.  I hit that hurdle myself when I wanted to publish my first book so I took a step back and decided to provide a service that these newer authors couldn’t afford otherwise, the number one reason they are publishing without it.  They dream and write and then hit the editing hurdle and can’t afford it but they don’t want to give up on the dream…that was me, too, I just had the editing experience to do something about it, so I am trying.  I hope to see some regulations at some point, there needs to be a centralized society like there is for published authors I think, we could chat on about this for a while!

Lori: In my opinion, it’s like this: When you’re published by a large, traditional publisher, they put money into necessary things like editing and marketing, but you receive a much smaller royalty per book. With independent publishing, you need to invest in that editing and marketing yourself, and receive the return when your royalties start coming in. Just like you wouldn’t launch a pizza place without investing in ovens up front, neither should you publish a book without investing in editing up front. Plus, you’re likely to make much more money over time when readers are not “turned off” by your books in the first place!

Debra:  Well said, absolutely.  It’s such a shame that they can so easily ruin their reputation and affect all future book sales if they don’t realize this right away before making the mistake.  How about something else about you that we won’t find on the Internet?

Lori:  My husband and I dream of an unusual type of retirement: We want to have a small, manageable home on Lake Gaston (in NC/VA), but go and live for 1-3 months at a time in various places around the world. The list of places is huge but just a few on our dream list include Portugal, Italy, Argentina, and Hawaii. As you can tell, we believe in dreaming big!

Debra:  You have to dream big, is there any other way?  So, what other indie author would you recommend to readers and why?

Lori:  Without a doubt, one of the best books I’ve read by an indie author was “Scent of Triumph” by Jan Moran. It is beautifully written, well researched, and really takes you back in time, while integrating the concepts of a strong, modern woman.

Debra:  What would you say is your biggest strength as a writer?

Lori:  I think that what readers enjoy most is my conversational writing style that feels almost as though you’re chatting with a friend. That aspect combined with the commiserative feeling of being understood, make readers enjoy both an escape and personal validation at the same time.

Debra:  Lori, that nails it for me too, exactly what I am enjoying about the book right now!  I want to take a minute to tell our audience a couple of things and then we can wrap up?

Lori: Sounds great, and thank you so much for hosting me on your blog! It’s been a pleasure getting to know you and I hope to get to know some of your blog’s readers too. Maybe they’ll comment below? (Hint, hint! Wink, wink!)

Debra:  So, I think Lori has an amazing website and you can learn more about her here: http://www.loritheauthor.com/about-lori/ and make sure you check out this page too as it tells you all about this blog tour we kept mentioning, huge event, lots of prize winning opportunities and this is an author that you should be watching…she is going far!  http://www.loritheauthor.com/unexpectingrelease/  A special thank you to Lori for the time she spent helping me understand how to be part of the tour, it was all new to me!

Here’s the book synopsis (from Lori’s amazing website) and a link for you to buy the book:Unexpecting-cover-198x300

Shelley and David are a couple of almost-empty-nesters whose children are just about all off to college. Preparing to embark on the next stage of their life, they’ve just ordered white furniture and are planning the vacation they’ve waited their entire lives to take.

Everything changes when Alexandra, seventeen and pregnant, shows up on their doorstep and announces that she’s the daughter he never knew he had! Their life is catapulted in a completely different direction, abounding with dilemmas: Not only do they have an additional child, but also a baby in a household that had been just about to become serene. How much should they help her? And how could they not?

Shelley feels like she no longer fits in anywhere and to top it off, having two seventeen-year-old girls suddenly plunged into being sisters and school mates is not exactly warm and fuzzy. When Alexandra’s behavior starts to become erratic, the couple is faced with even tougher decisions to make.

Hold on for an emotional yet witty ride as you join this family of characters in a story of love, loyalty, heartbreak, and humor that will stay with you long after you turn the last page!

Request your author interview by email at mrsdlhartmann@gmail.com

Debra: Hello and welcome to another edition of Talk Radio with NO Radio!

Today we will be interviewing Lilith Darville, author of erotic romance novels, most recently Scorpio Awakens.  She is from Canada and so has a bit of a drive to get here so I’ll share some things with you that I have learned about Ms. Lilith while we wait. In recent chats to set up the schedule for our interview I was so impressed with how dedicated to her writing she is. I mean, really, we all are but for me, anybody that gets up an extra hour and a half before work just to write, 5 am people, really, 5 am this lady is writing already, every single day, wow…I hate getting up early!

Seriously, though, Lilith’s job involves designing instructional materials all day and knowing it would be difficult to do that and then write creatively, she set a goal to write before work everyday. I also learned that she is a lifetime member of the Canadian Authors Association, and their motto is “Writers Helping Writers.” Love this, as a co-founder of the Authors Helping Authors community, my goal is to help others not have the experiences I did when I started out.

Perfect timing, I hear a car coming up the road…let’s see.< heads to window> Yes, that must be Lilith so we’ll give her just a minute to get parked and come inside…here’s a link to her author’s page if you want to take a look while we wait www.lilithdarville.com/

Neil: Hello? <sticks head in the doors> Debra?Lilith

Debra: Yes, hello, can I help you?

Neil: I’m here with Lilith Darville <comes in, offers his hand to shake mine> she just needed me to ask if your dogs are penned up, she’s a little afraid of big dogs especially.

Debra: Oh, yes, I made sure, she had mentioned that to me, please assure her they are not loose and you all come right in…mobile we go…I’ll come out with you <out the doors and approaches the shiny black Malibu, knocks on window> Hi, Lilith?

Lilith: Yes <mouthed through closed window, cracks window 2 inches down> Hi, yes, I’m Lilith, Debra? I just want to make sure if those dogs are loose?

Debra: No, no, they are in a pen and can’t get out. I made sure dear, you mentioned that you had a bad experience and didn’t want to meet my dogs. All is safe, won’t you come inside?

Lilith: <Neil opens her door> Oh, thank you, just had to be sure, your dogs are just huge!

Debra: Yes, well, living out here in the middle of nowhere, they are great guard dogs.

Lilith: It is absolutely beautiful here, I am so glad you invited me so I could enjoy this trip, this scenery, ahhhhh, this fresh air! <they are holding hands and looking off at the amazing view> Oh, this is my husband Neil, Debra –

Neil: Hello again <chuckles> thank you for having us, this adventure is well timed you know?

Debra: Oh?

Neil: I get to spend the whole day with my best friend who is usually very busy working and writing so thank you.

Debra: Aw, how sweet you are <the couple are arm in arm, smiling ear to ear, sharing occasional eye to eye glances, true love is in the air>

Lilith: It has been a beautiful day for us, we have had ice storms recently and its still quite cold back home and yes, to have him all to myself all day is blissful! <beams up at Neil>

Debra: Please do come in and relax, your trip was good then? <walking through the doors of the studio and into the gently playing sounds of The Eagles on my favorite classic rock station>

Lilith: Oh, lovely <looks all around the studio> and can we leave the music playing? Love this song, oh my gosh, this view <drags Neil by the hand over to my writing desk, pointing out the picture window> its amazing how the view changes from the driveway to this window perfectly placed as it is…it’s like we are on top of the world here!

Debra: I have a fascination with these mountains myself, that view inspires me in so many ways when I need it!

Lilith: All these pictures everywhere, you ride motorcycles, a lot! We once went on a motorcycle adventure through the Rockies with some friends, the views and the clean air were just amazing and I know it wouldn’t have been as enjoyable in a car, you know?

Debra: Yes, actually, that’s a big part of the appeal in riding for me too, you just can’t experience things like you can on a motorcycle. Do you ride often?

Lilith: Neil and I have had the pleasure of some great experiences. I have actually been on the back of a Honda Goldwing, doing 140km per hour once! Not so sure I would do that again though! On the trip through the Rockies, I just don’t have enough words to tell you how amazing it all was. It was like my mind detached when we were going around the hair-pin turns without guard rails, and I imagined what we’d look like if we slid down into the ravine. True story: The friend I was riding with and I got separated from Neil and his driver at one point and when we drove into Canmore, we saw something lying on the road. I asked what it was, and Dave said it was a leg and looked like Neil’s leg. You can well imagine my tension until Neil and Lorne finally arrived some time later (and I was nearly physically ill from worry). They’d stopped to wait out the rain and hadn’t seen us drive by. Dave, who had lived with us for a few years and was like our son (although of the same chronological age) thought the whole thing was quite hilarious. I did not!

Debra: Oh my gosh, I would have strangled him!

Neil: She was so pale and it took her a minute to tell me what happened, Dave was laughing and she was hugging me as if I’d been gone for weeks or something.

Debra: I can imagine…I would have probably fainted with worry until my sweetie showed up. Wow, didn’t know we had this in common, Lilith, you both must come back and visit when we can plan a ride together. We have great roads for riding in this area and my husband and I spend most every weekend just exploring and taking in the beauty here. Winding, curvy roads through the mountains, there is just nothing like it!

Lilith: Wonderful, we’ll get together about that!

Debra: I was just about to put on some tea, would you like some or something else, Lilith, Neil?

Lilith: Normally, I’d love a cup, but Neil’s a coffee drinker, so I’ll join him if it’s not too much trouble.

Debra: Not a problem at all.

Lilith: Lovely, thank you, need a hand?

Debra: No, you relax and get comfortable, I’ll only be a minute. Neil, make yourself comfortable, you can use the bar area, play darts, mess around on the pool table or kick back on the sofa there, just make yourself comfortable, please.

Neil: Thank you!

Lilith: Thanks. Look Neil, a cheese tray, you should have some, Debra can tell us where to go for lunch when we get done but aren’t you hungry?

Neil: A bit, I will have some if you do.

Debra: <hollers from the kitchen> What do you guys do for fun besides motorcycle adventures?

Lilith and Neil at the same time: Golf! —

Neil: You go ahead babe, it’s your interview.

Lilith: We play golf, although I’m not all that good, I do keep up and love the sport. We watched the Masters tournament this weekend. It was nice that Adam Scott won even if he comes across as an arrogant little thing – certainly it’s nice for an Australian to win their first major.

Debra: Here we go, coffee all around, yes, please help yourselves to the cheese tray. Sorry, I can’t chat on golf with you, don’t know a thing about it!

Neil: Well it’s not for everyone, thanks for the snack.

Debra: You are so welcome and Lilith, if you’re all set, let’s get started shall we?

Lilith: Ready when you are!

Debra: This is one of my favorite first questions – When did you start writing?

Lilith: Well Deb, I’ve been writing as long as I can remember. I have very clear memories of sitting on a friend’s porch around age 12 or 13 and writing love-sick poetry about an 18-year-old I had this huge crush on. Of course, he didn’t return my passion, although he was very kind to me. I still have some of those poems, and I just connected with this gentleman on Facebook after all these years. We’re both very happily married.

Debra: Very cool, small world and all that! When you first started writing, how did you write (typewriter, laptop, pen, pencil)?

Lilith: I started with a pen and paper as a child. I still have one of those old steno pads with some of the love-sick poetry in it.

Debra: What is your latest book called and could you explain to us in 20 words what it is about?

Lilith: I’m working on a novella called “Scorpio Begins.” Connor returns to Meredith’s arms after a 3-year absence and learns about love, lust and dominance.”

Debra: What is it you love most about writing?

Lilith: I love designing with words. It’s a great feeling when I’ve crafted a sentence or paragraph that flows naturally and sings with melody.

Debra: Is there anything about you or your writing that makes you unique from other authors?

Lilith: Like everyone, my life experience makes me unique, and I bring that diversity to my writing, which, in turn, makes it unique. Certainly my dysfunctional childhood and the journey of healing I embarked on in my twenties affect my writing and the choices I make as I develop my characters.

Debra: Which kind of reader do you think will enjoy your book?

Lilith: Readers who enjoy my book like to read good erotic fantasy with romance that goes well beyond the traditional romance with the usual set of characters.

Debra: Is it a Standalone, or part of a series?

Lilith: Scorpio Awakens is part of the Scorpio Saga series. So far, I have five books in mind – three full-length novels with two back-story novellas. Scorpio Awakens is the first one in the series and came out in February of this year. Many readers asked for more on Connor’s back story, so I’m working on a novella about Connor’s and Meredith’s love story that I expect out this summer. Next will be Scorpio Rising, which is the follow up to Scorpio Awakens. That will keep me busy for a while. <big smile>

Debra: What influenced or inspired you writing the series?

Lilith: I’ve always enjoyed writing erotic romance. I started my first erotic romance in the 90s and proudly took submissions to the editing circle I belonged to at that time. The published authors in the group discouraged me from continuing, telling me that I was “wasting” my talent, etc. I put away the novel that later became “Scorpio Awakens” and wrote a coming-of-age novel. However, I continued to write erotic stories for my husband. <grins and looks across room at Neil who returns her grin>

Debra: You two are awesome…it’s truly wonderful to see such love between two people! It seems to be the exception and not the rule these days unfortunately.

Lilith: Neil and I have been together for over 20 years, and our love and passion for each other just keeps growing and growing. He is my best friend and biggest supporter. We enjoyed a great time with the creation of Scorpio Awakens. Each day, I’d print what I’d written and we’d take it to Starbucks where he’d give his critique. We had some very animated discussions about the scenes, especially some of the sex scenes and a few times people moved to another table, presumably because the topic was too “spicy” for them. <both are laughing as she speaks about this> Our fantasy life was one of the motivating factors for me starting to write erotic romance a number of years ago. We’ve written stories for each other for many years. One of the most special moments in our life together was when Neil proposed the Double Diary to me – yes, that is based on real life, although the diary entries I use are made up for the story. We are on Diary #5 now, and we treasure these reminders of our love. http://lilithdarville.theblogpress.com/2012/10/12/scorpio-awakens-chapter-14-snippet-katherine/

Debra: How wonderful and you are truly blessed. My husband, Bob and I, are just as enamored with each other, though we don’t share writing, we share everything else and talk about everything. That’s what really stood out in what you just shared, you talk about everything and certainly that lends to strengthening your wonderful relationship. Aside from love’s inspiration, who are your favorite authors that also inspired you?

Lilith: I think I’d have to say that my favourite author of all time is James Lee Burke. His talent fascinates me, and I’m awed by his writing. His ability to make the reader live in the skin of his characters simply takes my breath away.

Debra: The Scorpio series, Why did you choose this title? Was it your first choice?

Lilith: They say write what you know, and I know about the astrological sign of Scorpio because both Neil and I are Scorpios, as are several close friends and family. Since Scorpio is the sex sign and those born under it are enigmatic and mysterious, it struck me as being a great title for a series. I also wanted a title that was somewhat unique. When I searched Amazon, I was pleasantly surprised to find that only one other fiction book with that title came up, which was the “Scorpio Illusion” by Robert Ludlum, another of my favourite authors. It was my first choice and stuck with me.

Debra: What was the hardest part for you working on your book?

Lilith: The hardest part was finding time. I wake at 5am to write. When I started Scorpio Awakens in 2009, I was working 12 – 14 hours per day as a director while balancing that with home and family.

Debra: I was sharing this with our readers before you arrived, absolutely amazing…that is probably what kept me from writing sooner, no way would I get up that early. Love your dedication to your craft! Tell us something about you we won’t find on the internet?

Lilith: I taught disco dance in the 80s.< laughs> So clever slipping that in the middle of all these great questions by the way…you got me!

Debra: Ya know, I just think readers want to know about the author, not the stuff everybody puts in those author profiles but what is that person really like and some how that enriches their reading experience. It does for me. So, where can we find more about you and your books?

Lilith: My website will be ready shortly. Meanwhile, you can follow me on Twitter (lilithdarville), Like me on Facebook, I have a profile and an author page, connect with me on LinkedIn or follow me on Pinterest or Tumblr.

Debra: If you were to write a novel outside your usual genre, which genre would you like to experiment with and why?

Lilith: I would revisit the coming-of-age novel I wrote. I found it very challenging to explore the emotional, physical and sexual childhood abuse my protagonist suffered. At the time, it was cathartic and the final leg of my healing journey. I’ve often thought of writing a sequel to it exploring the struggles the protagonist experienced as she learned to embrace her sexuality.

Debra: What came first, the idea for your first book or the decision to write a book?

Lilith: Interesting question. I’d have to say the idea came first as I’ve had many ideas for books for as long as I can remember. I don’t know if it was a conscious decision to write a book; the drive to do it is part of my core.

Debra: Have you ever had an idea which was inspired by a real life incident, but which you ultimately decided not to include in your story because readers would think it was too farfetched?

Lilith: Not because it was too farfetched, no; however, I have omitted a childhood abuse scene based on a real-life incident I read about, that always stuck with me, from Scorpio Awakens because of my concern that it would disturb my readers since so much of the romance genre is based on the concept of “happily ever after. And as I mentioned, I’ve kept our real-life double diary entries out of the book as well. Not because they’re too far-fetched, but because they’re our gift to each other.” <another silent message passes between her and Neil>

Debra: If your book, was made into a movie who would you want to play the main character and why?

Lilith: Johnny Depp would play Connor because he’s the only actor I can think of who is the epitome of Connor’s mystique and charisma. Neil disagrees with me here; he envisions a Brad Pitt type, like his character in Meet Joe Black or in Legends of the Fall. As for me, my books are romantic fantasies, and who better to have a tryst with than Johnny Depp. Okay, maybe Brad too. <big grin>

Debra: I’m gonna have to go with Neil on this one Lilith – Brad Pitt, especially in his Legends of the Fall role, that bad boy element is there and that long blonde hair, I’m a huge Brad Pitt fan and I have seen that movie, I don’t even know how many times, HOT!  <clears throat, drinks some coffee, smiles and shakes head to push the Brad Pitt images away>  Umm, where were we?  Oh, yes….  If you were to write a story featuring a fictional character from any movie of your choice, who would you choose and why?

Lilith: I would chose Bruce Wayne/Batman, as played by Michael Keaton, because I absolutely love super-hero movies and think it would be a great romance.

Debra: Ah, something else we have in common Lilith, I am a super-hero movie buff actually, especially Marvel Comics heroes. Very cool! So, if your book was made into a movie and you were asked for input into the soundtrack, are there any songs that would work especially well for any particular scenes?

Lilith: Music is an integral part of my life, so a soundtrack ran through my head for each of the scenes. In one of the scenes, Connor is listening to “Best of my Love” by the Eagles, which is one of my all-time favorite bands. As a point of interest, I’ve started a playlist for Connor, Kat and Tim on Pinterest.

Debra: If you could choose someone famous to record your book in audiobook format, who would you choose as the voice and why?

Lilith: I wouldn’t choose anyone famous. I get my daily reading fix by listening to recorded books, most of them from Audible. There are so many great professional narrators who bring the books alive for me. I’m thinking of Will Patton, who does many of the James Lee Burke novels; or Dick Hill who does many of the Lee Child Jack Reacher novels. By the way, Jack Reacher is one of my heroes. Lorelei King, who does many of the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum novels and she makes me laugh! I think there should be an award show to celebrate the best narrator.

Debra: Interesting. Are any of your characters based heavily on people you know or have met from real life and if so, would they regard it as a compliment or an insult to discover they were the inspiration for the character in question?

Lilith: I am passionately attracted to my husband and have been since I met him at age 14, although I didn’t much like him at the time because of theage difference. I used to spend hours looking at him, I thought he was that beautiful, though he’d insist that men aren’t beautiful, but I disagree. Both Tim and Connor started out being based on different sides of Neil’s character, although Tim is the one most closely based on his physical looks. Neil thinks it’s a great compliment that I’m writing about him, although he’s much too humble to admit it. <eye contact between these two lovers the entire time she is speaking fills the room with a sense of adoration and sweet and tender love>

Debra: Are any of your characters based on yourself and if so to what degree, and do you find it easier or more difficult to write characters based on yourself?

Lilith: I guess that to some degree Katherine is based on my character; it’s hard for me to say to what degree though. Certainly her looks are loosely based on mine, though she’s much more perfect than I am, and many times she responds the way I’d respond. That being said, as with all my characters, she took on a life of her own as the book developed.

Debra: Are there any good book blogs or websites you would recommend, both for discovering new books and authors, and also for promoting your own work?

Lilith: I would have to say that Goodreads is one of the best that I’ve found for promoting my work. It will be interesting to see how much Goodreads changes now that Amazon has acquired it.

Debra: Are there any book blogs or websites which you would recommend for an author looking to find potential reviewers for their book?

Lilith: Yes. I’ve recommended your article on finding reviewers on Authors Helping Authors to a couple of LinkedIn groups. I found Goodreads to be a good place to look for potential reviewers.

Debra: Oh, thank you! We are trying to get the word out so that more authors can find the support they need starting out especially, it can be so lonely and overwhelming. Would you rather have great reviews but average sales or great sales but average reviews?

Lilith: Shucks, Deb – can’t I have both?!?!? I think I’d vote for the good critical reviews as they are a great source of motivation and learning.

Debra: If this was your last book and your last day on earth, what would be your last words?

Lilith: I love you, Neil. Look for me in your dreams.

Debra: Any last words for our audience?

Lilith: I appreciate the support I’ve received over the past year from my readers. I’d love to hear from more of my readers; all comments are welcome.

Debra: Thank you for doing this interview and I am so thrilled you both came out…

Lilith: Thank you so much for having me. It’s been delightful spending this time with you.

Debra: I hope you can stay a bit and maybe do some sightseeing after a lovely dinner downtown? Double date?

Neil: Sounds like a plan. I’m starving now. Show us some good local dining. Oh, and thanks for the cheese and crackers; they hit the spot.

Debra: You’re most welcome. Let me wrap up and we’ll be off. Thank you readers for stopping in for today’s show and here are some links for you to learn more about Lilith Darville and her wonderful books:
