Review by Deja Lizer

Engadine Aerie by Bluette Matthey is the fifth book in the Hardy Durkin travel mystery series. The book is a standalone, and reading previous ones in the series isn’t necessary. It’s also not full of gore or macabre details, more clean and reachable for many audiences. The setting takes place in the beautiful Engadine valley of Switzerland, where the annual ski marathon gathers crowds from all over the world. The location chosen for this story is fantastic and the descriptions paint a memorable setting! The Engadine valley is normally quiet and calm, a winter playground for the rich and famous, but soon enough murders and terrorist plots ratchet up the drama. There are creative descriptions of the locations and scenes throughout the story and I found it easy to transport myself there. Hardy Durkin, the protagonist, is a likeable, amiable character who once again finds himself discovering a dead body and being thrust into ensuing complications. The supporting characters are diverse and well-drawn, and you really get to feel like you are among them with so much attention to detail.

The action and pace of the story are well balanced, making it a smooth read. What is also very cool is the research that unfolds, unexpectedly. It did feel a bit out of nowhere, but I am a history lover and so really enjoyed absorbing that knowledge and seeing how it was shaping the characters in the present. I did find some of the character development for secondary or tertiary characters more in depth than normal, sometimes they felt like tangents, but you really get to know their proclivities and distastes!

If you enjoy fast paced crime drama that is clean and chocked full of in-depth sensory details and characters, you should give this a try! I’m looking forward to being whisked away to another lesser-known locale in future adventures! A big thanks to the author for an ARC of this book which I have chosen to review.

Book Description:

The Invitation: To Journey Through a Conscious Mind, is a showcase in talent from author and poet Tyfany Janee. She’s eloquently produced the anthology through plaintive artistic angst. Injecting the essence of her soul into her prose. The diverse collection of poetry which lies between the covers is the result of an entire life’s work experimenting within her vocation.

Her work is comprised of truth, meaning, hope, possibility and a succinct hint of humor as she tears away the facade from humanity. The works shed light on relative issues that we’re all faced with in our easily waywardly led astray lives, and the monotony that makes up our existence.

The Invitation: To Journey Through a Conscious Mind is an ode to the beat generation of poets that carved their names in literary history. Any creative mind will revel in the inspiration that lies between these pages; it’s full of daring attitude, and celebration for the authentic. A unique look on love, that you have to dare to delve within. It harnesses true devotion, with a stark, hair raising element of modern reality.

What’s On the Road Ahead for Tyfany Janee:

I’m back in the writing lab now currently working on the next book, The Road Sometimes Traveled, it contains three short stories that are tied together by a central theme of my characters dealing with secrets of their past coming back to haunt them. I finished up working with a cover designer last week and it’s been put up on my website and all the ways to connect with me via social media.

A few months after that releases, I’ve planned to release another poetry book in 2018, titled, RSVP: To Be Unapologetic. That book will have poems that are aimed to shed light life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Everyone’s happiness isn’t the same. About being confident in your own skin, speak your truth, getting naked in a sense to say yes, I have flaws and imperfections. I’m human. But moreover, it pulls out a chair to the table that tells it like it is. We all have our vices, mistakes are made daily. Leave it, to move forward with learned lessons, and for those that are still there, still trying, you’re no less than anyone that has moved onto the next phase. But unapologetic in being who you are.

I get a lot of people that are very fond of The Invitation, and they like to hear that I have other work next but still are waiting on a novel. Especially since they’ve been gifted with a bit of flash fiction in an Ebook offered on my website. I am here to say that there will be a novel, in 2019, titled, To Love Him, I…

The novel approaches topics on trust, infidelity, lust, anger, and more through story’s characters. Feelings, behaviors, and thoughts expressed when women are in or have relationships from young to old with men.

It shows how the positive and negative relationships with men have affected the past, present and future. The father that was, or was not there. The first boyfriend to break your heart, the guy that left her with a baby. To the husband she has, had, or the almost but doesn’t count. Boyfriends who are not motivated to dream, ones too motivated and irrational that it stands in the way, or the ones that stay all the while, but never intend to give of a ring.

It includes an approach to show the male perspective, sometimes forgotten in these stories, as they deal with women who have been hurt in previous love, how they sometimes struggle with societal pressures of being men, the role they are intended to play and their needs for love.

Men that may be good guys but hurt women don’t see. The bad boy types, acting like they don’t need a woman, and that isn’t the reality. Some nervous to love because of the wrong ones, mistreatment, or the games they feel are played by woman. While others are selfish, with ill intentions, not as easy to see.
