A Book Reviewer is Born

By Valerie Taylor

Author of What’s Not Said (She Writes Press, September 2020)

Book reviewing became a new passion of mine in 2019, quite by chance. After I signed the contract with She Writes Press for my first novel, What’s Not Said, I began my search for a publicist.

I had set two criteria for selecting a publicist—location and budget.

Luckily, I discovered Meryl Moss Media (MMM) and met with principals at their office in Westport, CT, on a cold, rainy, and windy day in January 2019. Though I was a debut author, I was treated as though I’d written the next, great bestselling novel, spending more than an hour talking about my goals, my book, and their credentials.

Since there was a year and a half before What’s Not Said was scheduled to be published, I was concerned that I was being too anxious, too premature.

That’s when I learned about BookTrib, a subsidiary of MMM that exists to address the needs of “under-the-radar authors,” like me.

They showed me a menu of options to promote my book from which I could pick and choose the options I wanted. This meant I could manage my budget according to my terms.

But wait, BookTrib wouldn’t start promoting my book until three to six months out. What could I do in the meantime?

Build my “platform,” they suggested. Honestly, someone should create a four-letter word for platform, because to a novice it feels like a swear word. Before leaving their office, I promised I would do that. At least I’d try.

Anything else I could do?

Certainly. Would I be interested in being a book reviewer, a Contributing Author?

I jumped at the opportunity without much thought. On the plus side, I’ve read and reviewed a dozen really great books over the last year. On the downside, it’s a significant time commitment—both reading and reviewing—especially when my own writing beckons.

Once the review is published on BookTrib.com, the work doesn’t stop there. I post it to my website and promote through social media and on other book-related websites. For me, that’s one of the most important aspects of the process because I’m simultaneously self-promoting my own work.

Recently, in fact, a publicist read my reviews on BookTrib and reached out and asked if I would read and review her client’s book.

So the circle is complete. With What’s Not Said published, and the sequel, What’s Not True, scheduled to release in August 2021, I’m no longer just a debut novelist, but a published author and a credentialed book reviewer.

Book Trailers: Fun with Multi-Discipline Storytelling

By Alexis Marie Chute

Is anyone ever only one thing? I am an author of four books, but that is not all. My skills fall mostly within the creative realm and it is a joy when I can bring these different areas together.

I have always been a writer and artist, since as young as I can remember. In high school I took art and photography, and got giddy over English class. My undergraduate degree is in visual art—I made conceptual clothing and mixed-media paintings—with a minor in English. My masters is in creative writing. I have been a professional artist and photographer for twenty years.

This background has brought together many artistic disciplines and through them I create meaningful artwork of all kinds. When I approach a new project, storytelling is always top of mind. I ask myself: What creative medium will tell this story the best?

For my memoir, Expecting Sunshine: A Journey of Grief, Healing and Pregnancy After Loss, I directed and produced a feature documentary film (of the same name). It was a wonderful, challenging, and rewarding process. I had never engaged with video before, but I realized that it truly is the culmination of so many of my creative outlets.

Photography – I used my photographic eye to frame the scenes and capture beautiful lighting.

Visual art – the film is symbolic and utilizes many wordless ways of communicating that brings depth to the story.

Writing – Not only did I write the book, Expecting Sunshine, but the script for the narration of the film as well.

Creative thinking – The ability to write well and plot a story in book form comes in handy when cutting together scenes for a visual video-based creation.

Expecting Sunshine documentary film has won a plethora of awards and has been screened around the world, from Scotland to the United States to Canada.

For my novels in The 8th Island Trilogy, I brought together all of these skills—and also my ability to make conceptual clothes from way back in my undergrad degree, my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art and Design. I created costumes for the fantasy creatures in the three books; Above the Star, Below the Moon, and Inside the Sun. I worked with my friend and fellow artist, Perry Medina, to design and implement body art. I also did the hair and make-up for all the creatures.

What is interesting is how the book trailer process impacted the actual books. As I sketched the costumes, I’d realize that in the books I hadn’t described a character’s eye color, fur color, or some other detail, for example, which I needed to show in the trailer. I would make the decision on this visual element and then add it into the books before their final publishing. It was a funny and symbiotic process.

I want to share with you some of the book trailers I’ve made for The 8th Island Trilogy. A few of them incorporate original music from my friends’ band, the Moonshine Mamas. All of the films were created with approximately 10+ people, most of whom are my friends who volunteered to be a part of the fun. A couple of the trailers are serious in tone, while others are humorous. I hope you enjoy these videos—and can watch them through a different vantage point now that you know what goes into their creation.
