Book Excerpts

  1. Short Story Pro Market is a reference book created to assist you in the publication process of your short stories. It will help guide you in finding a publisher by providing you with the necessary information needed. There are over 150 publishers listed inside. Think of this book as a “tool”, one you can constantly look back on with any questions you may have. This book is designed to provide as detailed information about each publisher as possible, as long as the information is necessary in submitting to a given publisher.

Inside you will find a breakdown of information by genre. Within each genre you will find a list of professional paying short story markets in alphabetical order. Under every publisher, there will be a series of requirements and requests made by the publisher. This is where the details come in handy to you; these are the stipulations the publishers want you to adhere to before they consider your work. Many publishers are lenient, and occasionally accept things outside of what is listed, but, for the most part, keep within the boundaries. Also, you will notice some publishers are listed under multiple genres. This is because those publishers accept several genres.

As indicated by the title, this book contains ONLY professional paying markets, which have been verified by their websites and other online information. All publishers listed will publish short stories; however, there are a few that may publish novellas, flash fiction, articles, and poetry. The payment rate on those may be different and may not fall under the professional paying category. Publishers listed are primarily English speaking publishers and want English rights. This includes, but is not limited to: North American, Canadian, Australian, UK, European, etc.

  1. This reference guide differs from other popular guides in several ways. First and foremost, this book is narrowed down specifically for short story writers who only want to submit to publishers who pay a professional rate. This means that lower paying markets are not listed. Writers should always submit to the best and highest paying publishers first. Short Story Pro Market is written to be short, because I do not list novel publishers, poetry publishers, specific trade journals, contests or literary agencies. It is organized for short story publishers only. Also, you will not find writing tips, author brand information, promotional material, etc. This makes it easier for you to get straight to the submissions without being bogged down by extra information, which is often unnecessary in short story submissions. Due to this book being short and directly to the point, it is cheaper than competitors’ guides.

Inside you will find SFWA (Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America), MWA (Mystery Writers of America), and other pro publishers outside of these group. Some publishers are working on becoming part of an organization but haven’t reached all the requirements yet. If the publisher listed is part of an organization, it will be mentioned under the publisher’s information.

  1. Short Story Pro Market provides authors a huge head start in finding a publisher by helping you avoid agonizing over countless grueling hours of online searches, comparisons, queries, and complications. You save precious time by having everything in one place from publisher names and websites to the accepted document format. It’s all inside.

This book has a caveat to the pay scale, and thus limits the list to only the publishers that follow it. That is every publisher must pay their authors at least six cents a word or forty dollars a page. Both numbers exist because some publishers, or more specifically genres, may prefer one method or the other. Also, some publishers may not pay over a certain capped word count, so pay attention to that detail, but if available, it will be listed under the publisher.

I didn’t ever expect to be an author, and certainly not of historical fiction. It all started back in 2008 when I began researching my family history. I had no idea what I would find but by 2010 it was clear that my Victorian ancestors had a far from normal life. After much deliberation, I felt compelled to turn their story into a novel.

Having never written fiction before (my day job involves medical writing), I thought I would struggle to reach one hundred pages. How wrong I was. Several years, and a lot of research later, I ended up with the first draft of a 350,000 word trilogy!

That draft is now the basis of the Ambition & Destiny Series, a family saga of Love, Loss and Betrayal set against the backdrop of Victorian England.

When I started writing, I thought the story started in 1843. There was one document in my research, however, that showed my great, great, great, grandfather faced a charge of larcency (theft) in 1839. It didn’t appear to impact the main story and so initially I only made a very minor reference to it in a flash back. It was almost six years later, when an editor suggested that the start of the trilogy contained too much backstory, that I relooked at the information. That was when I realized there was much more to the incident than I thought.

It was at that point that my short story prequel, Condemned by Fate, was born. It takes place in 1839/1840 and covers the months surrounding the larceny charge. Although it leads into the Ambition & Destiny Series, it is a standalone story.

Condemned by Fate was published on Amazon at the end of 2016. It is also available as a free pdf download on my website – CLICK HERE. Hooks & Eyes, the first book of the Ambition & Destiny Series, is due for publication in early 2017. Subsequent books will be available later in the year.

Although inspiration for the books came from real life events, there were a lot of gaps in my research. In addition, the story took place nearly two hundred years ago. As a result, all characterization and a good proportion of the storyline is fictitious. Names have been changed and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental.

Condemned by Fate
A Love Story. A Foul Conspiracy. A Future of Unintended Consequences.

Charles Jackson’s untroubled lifestyle is about to end. When he accepts work at a local farm the last thing on his mind is falling in love. That’s before he meets Mary.

Mary’s world revolves around the farm and the security of her family. She has never craved the touch of a man, but one look at Charles changes that.

When her father catches them in an intimate embrace, he chases Charles from the farm, keeping Mary a prisoner in her own home. Determined to see her again, Charles inadvertently places himself at the scene of a robbery. Imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, can he overcome the trials that lie ahead and discover those who will stop at nothing to keep them apart?

Condemned by Fate is a short story prequel to the Ambition & Destiny Series, a compelling family saga set in Victorian England.

80 Stories, 25 Countries, 5 Continents, One Heck of a Ride!

cartoon-travel-man-backpack-around-world-19325835Travel is an amazing experience and I’ve spent years of my life living out of my backpack. I’ve explored well-beaten tourist trails and to far corners beyond them. Each journey is an adventure and each adventure gives with a story to tell. So one day I decided that yes, I would write 80 of my best Travel Stories.

After leaving me speechless, travel then turned me into a storyteller!

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 TALES is:

TRUTHFUL: Firstly and perhaps most importantly, when you read a travel story, you want it to be genuine. You don’t want to read some fictional account of something that never happened written by someone who’s never been there! All my stories are completely true and related exactly as they happened. Nothing in my book has been contrived or exaggerated.

CONCISE: Each of my stories have been intentionally edited to 500 words that all fit neatly onto one page. This has often meant making every word count! The result is that you can enjoy each adventure without having to read any unnecessary diction.

VIBRANT: While many travel books are only text, Around the World in 80 Tales is packed with colour photos. With the exception of only a few, they are all photos are my own photography or taken on my own camera. All the images have an explanatory caption with them.

INFORMATIVE: You want a travel story to be entertaining right? And it would be also nice if you could learn about different places too? Around the World in 80 Tales provides exactly that, page after page! Aside from relating my personal experiences, I’ve also included numerous relevant facts and historical information.

DIVERSE: My stories have been rearranged from the original order they were written in. This was done to create a fascinating journey through a diverse range of travel situations and activities. As the pages turn, you’ll be taken on adventures such as snorkelling in Malaysia to hiking in Nepal and camel riding in Morocco. Enjoy the ride!
