Three college juniors. A swim team. A manipulative coach. Unexpected life circumstances. A girl struggling with her sexuality. A story that you will not forget.

Angels Can’t Swim is a novella that captures so many elements of the life of a student-athlete, from mental health to sexuality to relationships. While partially a story about swimming, it is also the story of finding yourself, finding your voice, and figuring out who you want to be. Focusing on college students and those around them but dealing with issues that cross the lifespan, readers from young adult all the way up will all enjoy this book and find something in one of the characters that sounds a little bit like them.

My new book, Angels Can’t Swim, will be available on Kindle June 22. The book is a novella that focuses on college swimmers, sexuality, and mental health. Please check out my website to learn more! Excerpts below…

“On a medium campus in a small town near a big city, two teammates trudge through the snow to breakfast after Friday morning lift. One is tall, one is shorter. One is shy, one is chatty. One is slower, one is fast. One is gay. Both are exhausted.

They are friends. They speak but don’t speak; talk about practice and class and their other friends but not about the things that live inside their heads, the things waiting to be talked about.

On the inside the tall shy teammate thinks about what she will eat, what she should eat, and what she did eat, and wishes she never actually had to eat again. On the outside she makes a sarcastic joke and feels butterflies in her stomach when the chatty teammate laughs. She tries to kill the butterflies with her mind.”

“In Jenna’s mind Ted is a sculptor, sitting behind the stages of their lives and constructing an atmosphere that will help them swim fast, fixing the little things that need to be fixed. In this role he is caring, helpful, devoting his efforts to the good of the girls and the team. And yet underneath her admiration, underneath her gratefulness, deep down Jenna knows that sometimes he walks a thin line between simple caring and the dark side of too much. Too much behind the scenes, too much outside of swimming, too much in their private lives.”

Author Interview Lonna Enox The Last Dance

If you could put yourself as a character in your book, who would you be?  That question is difficult, because Sorrel, my main character, has some of my personality but is much more assertive, confident, and courageous.  I tend to be more like Will, the journalism college student, who struggles with a career he loves even while he longs to fulfill the expectations of those he loves most.

Do you have another profession besides writing?  I have a Master’s Degree in English Literature.  When I began college, I planned a degree in journalism.  Along the way, I worked as a reporter for various amounts of time.  But teaching, which I found rewarding, fit well into having a family of my own.  I loved that career.  Now, it provides financial backing while I pursue this lifelong dream.

How long have you been writing?  My mother said I wrote my first book when I was 4.  She had started practical nursing training, my older brother had started school, and my dad kept my younger brother and me with him as he farmed to provide winter food for the cattle.  I wrote my books with a crayon on brown grocery bags and then read them to Ben.  They never knew when or how I learned to read or write.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?  Ideas just arrive.  My brain has always been a “what if”.  I see something or someone and I wonder, “What if ?”  The information comes from research.  I go to the area where I want my books to be set and my husband Ron and I spend time there, walking, taking photos, talking to people, etc.

Do you ever get writer’s block?  I seldom get writer’s block. What helps you overcome it?  Sometimes I write a letter to someone to get my mind flowing.  Other times, I will make a journal entry, something often that has no relation to anything in my book.  When I have finished it, I realize that I have either solved a problem for a character…or raised a question.

What is your next project?  I am almost finished with the fourth book in my Sorrel Janes series.

“My name is Mary. I come from Magdala. Well, actually, I come from a lot more than Magdala, but the time I walked on Earth, the time you heard about, I was born in Magdala. I come from a much greater place than that, however, and so do you.”

Travel through the ages and hear reflections on love, life, and one of the greatest stories of all time from one of the most amazing women of all time. Mary Magdalene offers us insight into her life with Yeshua (Jesus), and gives her perspective on the events that occurred then, and on up to our present day.

Mary and Yeshua were very special, as we all are very special. They were very awake beings – very aware of the connection of all life and the divinity within, but these attributes are available to us all.

Through the lyrical, poetic, passionate, sometimes funny, always heart-centered unfolding of her story, Mary reminds us how to access these qualities to create a beautiful life for each one of us and all of us – the life she and Yeshua lived.
